Modified and translated according to a german text for the laudation on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

After studying geology in Tübingen and Bonn, he took up a lectureship in Rio de Janeiro in 1960. In the course of his extensive field work, he established the Eschwege Institute in Diamantina (Brazil) and habilitated at the University of Heidelberg in 1964. In 1970 he was appointed to the chair of geology and paleontology at the University of Freiburg. His strong interest in data processing led to the formation of a new focus in research and teaching. Many were able to benefit from the modern equipment and the additional programming courses offered. The long-time director of the Geological Institute supervised 51 dissertations and more than 100 diploma theses. After his retirement in April 2000, Prof. Pflug devoted more time to the further development of his GeolKart program, which can be used to create geological maps. He still supervised diploma theses and conducted excursions to the Swiss Alps as long as an eye disease allowed it.

Before reaching his 80th birthday, he passed away on February 9, 2012.
